How to Make a Multiplayer Game: Start With Two Players

Make a small local loop, then test server ownership and reconnects in one private room.

Your first playable milestone

  1. Separate local play from networking

First prove movement, token pickup and a round ending in a solo prototype. Online multiplayer adds state ownership, latency, hosting and abuse prevention; an asset pack does not solve them.

  2. Use one private room

Start with two players and a short round. For a browser/custom JavaScript client, inspect the Colyseus tutorial and exact SDK versions. It is not a drop-in networking plugin for every engine.

  3. Give the server authority

Clients submit bounded input. The server validates movement, owns scores and resolves competing pickup attempts. Never trust a browser-supplied score or identity without validation.

  4. Handle the awkward journeys

Test two simultaneous joins, one disconnect, one reconnect and the host disappearing. Put limits on messages and room size before inviting strangers.

  5. Price and protect deployment

Free code does not mean free hosting. Review server bills, rate limits, secrets and personal-data handling. Keep public matchmaking out of the first playable milestone.

For each listing, review the separate permissions to sell a finished game, redistribute files and include files in a source/template product. No pack is implied to contain a complete game or all the mechanics below.

Build your own version

Build Now: One two-player room with a short round; Server-owned token collection and score; Join, disconnect, reconnect and round reset. Quick Build: A solo token-collection room first; defer networking, matchmaking and public deployment.

Can I use these resources in a commercial game?

Check each exact licence and edition. A permission to sell a game does not automatically allow reselling the original pack or including its files in a reusable source product. Keep attribution and notices when required.
