How to Make a 2D RPG: Your First Small Quest
Build one place, one character and one quest before investing in a full RPG world.
Your first playable milestone
Choose one quest
An NPC asks for an item, the player finds it, and returning it changes the dialogue. Write the three quest states before choosing assets.
Prove movement and interaction
Make one walkable room with collision and an interaction key. Keep dialogue separate from movement so a conversation cannot leave the player stuck.
Import one character first
Check frame size, facing directions and idle/walk clips. OpenGameArt submissions have their own attribution terms; inspect the exact listing rather than treating the site as one licence.
Choose a quest system that fits
The catalogue quest plugin targets Godot. Use it only with a compatible Godot version; other engines need their own existing event or state system. RPG Maker is a paid alternative with separate product and asset terms.
Test state transitions
Try talking before finding the item, collecting it twice, completing the quest twice and reloading a save. Add combat only after this small story is playable.
Building blocks from original creators
Start with the free edition where it fits. Paid editions and services are optional; inspect current prices, licence conditions and engine versions. Preview credits appear on each resource card.

For each listing, review the separate permissions to sell a finished game, redistribute files and include files in a source/template product. No pack is implied to contain a complete game or all the mechanics below.

Check each exact licence and edition. A permission to sell a game does not automatically allow reselling the original pack or including its files in a reusable source product. Keep attribution and notices when required.
